First Half Carries Catholic Past Football in Season Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic scored 27 first-half points en route to a 34-7 victory over the McDaniel College football team Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.

The Green Terror (0-1) were limited to just 68 yards of total offense in the first half as they dropped their third-straight in the series and second in-a-row on the road.

Six of the team's eight offensive possessions in the opening half ended in punts while the other two resulted in a turnover and the end of the half. The Cardinals (1-0) turned four of those punts into quick touchdowns as their four first-half scoring drives averaged less than two minutes in time of possession.

Catholic's four other offensive possessions resulted in just 21 yards on 12 plays with two punts and two interceptions.

Despite falling behind in the first half, McDaniel found some rhythm in the second as they had 212 yards of total offense and averaged 6.2 yards per play. The defense also totaled three sacks, forced three punts and had one interception.

For the game, the Green Terror allowed just two sacks and had one turnover. In his first career start, sophomore Tony Miller completed nine passes for 120 yards. He was one of four quarterbacks to see action under center for McDaniel with freshman Angel Granado, Jr. completing 4-of-5 passes for 34 yards while carrying the ball three times for 40 yards.

Graduate student Trent Gaskins was the team's leading rusher with 12 carries for 42 yards. Gaskins also had 39 yards receiving while senior Kyle Silver hauled in three passes for 50 yards. Graduate student Sean Carter had a team-high seven receptions.

Sophomore Micajah Cobbs had a 12-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for his first career touchdown.

Defensively, senior Jevin Tranquillo led the way with 11 tackles, including nine solo, five for loss and two sacks. Graduate student Mike Dunn added nine tackles with two for loss and 1.5 sacks.

The Green Terror make their home debut next Saturday, Sept. 9 when they host Rowan on Rembert Field at Gill Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. McDaniel posted wins in two of its final three games at home a year ago.
