Craig Joins 100-Hit Club in Season Finale Against Mules

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College softball senior Evie Craig totaled six hits, including the 100th of her career as the Green Terror concluded their season with a split against Muhlenberg at home Saturday on Senior Day.

McDaniel (12-25, 4-12 CC) scored 17 runs on 29 hits over the two games, the most the team has totaled in a doubleheader this season.

Craig went 6-for-9 with a double and two RBIs. She entered the day with 94 career hits and after picking up two in game one, she went a perfect 4-for-4 in game two, picking up her 100th hit in the last at-bat of her career in the bottom of the seventh of game two.

Graduate student Katy Newton also had six hits, going 6-for-9 with two RBIs and four runs. She finished the season with 56 hits, the fourth-most in a single-season in team history and just six shy of the record.

Senior Kylie Sears finished her final appearance as a Green Terror going 4-for-6 with three walks.

The Green Terror rallied from a seven-run deficit in the opener to claim their seventh win in the last 10 meetings against the Mules. After the visitors scored six runs in the top of the first, McDaniel got two back in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Craig and junior Mandy Butz.

Muhlenberg (14-23, 5-11 CC) would add three more in the top of the second and lead 9-2 following an RBI-single by Kersti Svenningsen.

However, the Green Terror scored seven unanswered runs to tie the game, scoring two in the second and five in the third, highlighted by a two-out, two-run double from junior Makayla Calamita that tied the game at 9-9.

The Mules went back in front with two runs in the top of the fourth, but McDaniel scored three on three consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead, 12-11. Sophomore Jessica Millard scored the game-winning run on an RBI-single by Newton.

Sophomore Hannah Costa was perfect over the final 3.1 innings, retiring all 10 batters she faced to pick up her third win of the season and second in the last three days.

Newton was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored while sophomore Bella Sylvester was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Eight players drove in at least one run for McDaniel while seven scored at least one run, including Newton and Millard who scored three runs apiece.

Muhlenberg 12, McDaniel 5

After totaling 15 hits in the opener, the Green Terror had 14 in the game two, but were limited to five runs after stranding 18 runners on base, including 11 in scoring position. The team left the bases loaded in four of its seven offensive innings.

The game was tied at 3-3 after each team scored two runs in the first and one in the second. However, the Mules broke the game open with five runs in the top of the third.

Trailing 8-3, McDaniel cut its deficit in half when Butz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, but Muhlenberg got the run back when Kaya Mahy led of the fourth with a solo home run to center. Maddy Svenningsen pushed the lead to 11-4 with a two-run double in the fifth.

Craig drove in the final run for the Green Terror with an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth before the Mules capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.

Sitting at 99 career hits, Craig led off the bottom of the seventh and drove a 3-0 pitch up the middle for her 100th career hit. It was also her 51st hit of the season, the sixth-most in a season in team history.

Craig and Newton are the third set of teammates to each total 50 hits in a season in program history joining Rachel Sidney (58) and Stephanie Maring (53) in 2014 and January Scott (54) and Julie Backof (50) in 1998.

Craig was 4-for-4 while Newton and Sears each went 3-for-4. Butz was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
