Newton Picks Up 100th Hit, Softball Splits at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - McDaniel College softball graduate student Katy Newton totaled her 100th career hit as the Green Terror split a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday at Clothier Softball Field.

The Green Terror (10-21, 3-9 CC) have split each of their last three doubleheaders and are also .500 in their last four road games, posting a 2-2 record.

Newton went 3-for-7 with two walks, picking up hit No. 100 with a single to left to lead off the top of the sixth of game one. She now has 101 hits in 112 career games while posting a .340 batting average.

Senior Evie Craig finished the day with a team-high four hits, including three in game one while junior Makayla Calamita finished the day 3-for-5 with two walks and two RBIs.

McDaniel 8, Swarthmore 3

The Garnet (16-16, 4-8 CC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener, scoring three runs on a double by Alexandra Simon in the bottom of the third.

From there, the Green Terror scored eight consecutive runs to take a five-run lead in the top of the seventh. Calamita got the visitors on the board with an RBI-double in the top of the fourth before kick-starting a four-run fifth with a bases loaded walk in the fifth to pull the team within one.

Senior Kylie Sears immediately followed with a bases-clearing double to center to put McDaniel in front 5-3 before Newton scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth.

Newton drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh before Craig totaled her third hit of the game with a two-out, RBI-single to center for the team's final run.

Swarthmore had the tying run at the plate and runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Hannah Costa retired the final two batters on fly outs to center to preserve the win and earn her first save this season and the second of her career.

Senior Parker Murphy earned her sixth win this season after totaling two scoreless innings of relief in the fourth and fifth as she faces just one batter over the minimum.

Craig went 3-for-5 with an RBI while Calamita was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs. Newton also had two hits, going 2-for-3 with two walks and one RBI.

Swarthmore 3, McDaniel 1

The Green Terror totaled eight runs on nine hits in the opener, but were held to just one run on six hits in the second. Murphy held the Garnet at bay, allowing just one run and four hits through five innings in her 15th start this season.

After an RBI-single by junior Paytyn Hazelton scored Newton to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth, Swarthmore answered with the tying run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.

With the game tied at 1-1, the Garnet would take the lead on passed ball before adding an unearned insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Hazelton drew a two-out walk in the top of the seventh, but Emily Bertrand closed the door, picking up her first complete game when she retired Newton on a ground out to end the game to record her third win in her second start of the season.

Six different players had one hit apiece for McDaniel, including Hazelton who was 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.

Costa suffered her second loss in 10 appearances this season, allowing two runs on two hits in the sixth.

The Green Terror continue their six-game road trip on Tuesday when they head to Carlisle, Pa. for a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Dickinson. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
