Carter Breaks Season Receptions Record on Senior Day

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Graduate student Sean Carter broke the school's single season receptions record with a touchdown catch in the third quarter as the McDaniel College football team fell to Salisbury on Senior Day Saturday, 59-20.

The Green Terror (0-9) threw for over 300 yards for the second time this season as freshman Angel Granado Jr completed 32-of-49 passes for a career-high 307 yards, his first career game with at least 300 yards passing. He also had two passing touchdowns, including one to Carter and one to freshman Logan Marsh.

With nine catches for 44 yards and a touchdown, Carter now has 66 catches this season, surpassing the previous record of 63 set by Mike Oliveto in 2015 when he had 63 catches for 582 yards.

Carter broke the record with his seventh catch of the game, a 5-yard touchdown pass from Granado with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter.

For his career, Carter is eighth in program history with 115 receptions. With one game remaining, he needs just 37 yards to become the 16th player in program history with 1,000 yards receiving.

Meanwhile, senior Hunter Sigler hauled in six catches for a game-high 87 yards and now has 1,305 career receiving yards, moving him past Joey Ellis into 10th in program history. Ellis had 102 receptions for 1,264 yards from 1999-03. Sigler also has 86 career catches.

The Sea Gulls (5-4) scored on nine of their first 11 possessions with the other two resulting in a punt and the quarterback taking a knee to end the first half. They led 17-0 after the first quarter despite running just eight plays for 54 yards and totaling 3:53 in time of possession.

Salisbury's average starting field position on its three first-quarter scoring drives was the McDaniel 25-yard line.

After two punts and a turnover on downs to open the game, the Green Terror finally broke through on their fourth drive of the game, going 75 yards in 12 plays before graduate student Trent Gaskins scored on a 9-yard run to cut their deficit to 17-7 with 12:59 left.

On the next Sea Gull possession, the McDaniel defense forced a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense, but the ensuing drive stalled at Salisbury 49-yard line before a punt on fourth down was blocked, giving the visitors the ball at the McDaniel 27-yard line.

Four plays later, the Sea Gulls scored the first of six touchdowns over their next seven possessions as they led 59-14 with 14:54 remaining in the fourth.

Salisbury's average starting field position Saturday was the McDaniel 45-yard line. Eight of the team's 14 drives started in Green Terror territory with seven resulting in 52 points. The Sea Gulls blocked three kicks while forcing two turnovers and another two on downs.

Senior Jevin Tranquillo led the McDaniel defense with 10 total tackles, including 0.5 sacks. Junior Alex Brown added eight tackles while senior Matt Carey had six tackles and one for loss. Senior Kori Bryant totaled five tackles, 0.5 sacks and one blocked kick.

McDaniel concludes its 2023 season next Saturday, Nov. 11 at No. 8 Johns Hopkins. Kickoff from Homewood Field is at 5 p.m.
