THE SKINNY
Amherst, ranked 21st in the latest IWLCA Div. III coaches poll, overcame a late rally by McDaniel with a goal in the final 34 seconds to force overtime before prevailing in the extra session, 11-10.
THE LEADERS
• Emma Legacy (Deale, Md./St. Mary's) led the Green Terror with two goals, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
• Emma Miller (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) added a goal and two assists to go with five draw controls.
FOR THE FOES
• Lauren Friedman led the Mammoths with four goals, including the game-winner nearly midway through the first overtime period.
• Becky Kendall recorded three goals and one assist.
• Elizabeth Rose added a third hat trick.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Emily Sheppard (Queenstown, Md./Queen Anne's County) began the scoring with a goal from Acadia Noll (Ellicott City, Md./Chesapeake) just 1:17 into the game. Amherst responded just 48 seconds later when Fiona Jones found the back of the net. McDaniel then reeled off three in a row with Lara Jensen (West Chester, Pa./The Tatnall School) sparking the run with 12:12 to play in the quarter before Natalie Hoff (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) and Emma Legacy each hit free-position goals to make it a 4-1 lead with 9:38 showing. Amherst responded with the final three of the period to knot the game at 4-all.
• Becky Kandall broke the deadlock with 8:30 remaining in the second quarter. McDaniel responded with a Michaela Reid (Abington, Md./Patterson Mill) capitalized on a free-position attemp to tie it again. The Mammoths responded with another three straight to end the period and take an 8-5 lead into the break.
• Lauren Friedman's free-position goal stretched the lead to 9-5 with 9:37 to play in the third before Legacy hit an eight-meter shot of her own just over eight minutes later.
• Sheppard netted a second on a free-position with 11:53 shwowing to close the deficit to 9-7 before Emma Miller finished a solo run and found Kealey Allison (Frankford, Del./Indian River) to tie the game with 4:08 to play. With 1:44 left in regulation, Miller once again found Allison again for a 10-9 lead. However, Kendall found the back of the net with the equalizer with just 34 ticks remaining.
• Friedman got the game-winner on a free-position with 3:34 to play in the first overtime period.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Amherst finished with a 31-24 edge in shots and 14-11 edge in draw controls.
• Kendall Gracie (St. John's, Fla./C. Milton Wright) recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers for McDaniel.
