Brooms notches seven tackles, two fumble recoveries

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus scored 28 straight points before staving off a McDaniel rally to notch a 28-21 Centennial Conference (CC) football victory on Saturday.

Garvin Brooms (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror (3-5, 2-5 CC) with seven tackles, 2.5 sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Stacey Gardner led the Bears (6-2, 5-2 CC) with 22 carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

After a Brooms sack on fourth down thwarted Ursinus' opening drive, McDaniel marked 72 yards in 12 plays. Bamasa Bailor (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) cashed in the drive, skying for a three-yard drive on the sideline of the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 5:26 on the first-quarter clock.

The Bears responded just 2:29 later with a Samuel Ragland 15-yard run up the middle to cap a six-play, 55-yard drive and knot the game at 7-all.

After a 73-yard Alex DeSpirito punt pinned the Green Terror inside its own 10, Heath Hidley intercepted a third-down pass attempt and returned it 19 yards for a 14-7 lead with 13:58 showing in the second quarter.

The Bears stretched the lead to 21-7 on an 11-yard Gardner run just over five minutes later.

Gardner broke through the line on third-and-4 for a 48-yard touchdown run to stretch the lead to 28-7 with 5:32 remaining.

Brooms recovered an errant pitch to give the offense the ball at the Ursinus 33. Just five plays later, Will Koester (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) found Matt Schleifer (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) on a fourth-and-10 for a 17-yard touchdown on the slant to trim the deficit to 28-14 with 1:12 to play in the opening half.

The defenses took over for the first 22 minutes of the second half before Koester once again hit Bailor on a fourth-down from the 12-yard line. Bailor caught the ball at the one and fought for the final yard and touchdown to draw the visitors within one score.

Bailor led the offense with nine catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Koester threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 17-for-38 passing.

Markos Katrakazis (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) led the defense with eight tackles each.

The Green Terror returns to action at Susquehanna on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
