Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Moravian scored 20 straight points to break a 6-all deadlock en route to a 40-8 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) football opener for both teams on Saturday.
Drew Scott (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) led the Green Terror (0-2, 0-1 CC) on defense with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops. Mike Oliveto (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) led the way on offense, catching seven passes for 46 yards.
Chris Negron paced the Greyhounds (2-0, 1-0 CC) with 143 rushing yards, scoring one touchdown.
Moravian took the game's first possession 71 yards in seven plays, needing just 2 minutes, 3 seconds to take a 6-0 lead on an Eli Redmond 13-yard touchdown run.
A bad snap on the ensuing PAT led to a pass attempt from the holder Jimmy McCarthy. His pass was intercepted by Garrett Diehl (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) at the goal line. Diehl returned the ball to the Greyhound 25, where he was tripped up en route to the attempt for the defensive two points.
A Mike Casper (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional) 38-yard field goal with 7:21 to play trimmed the deficit to 6-3. Before the ensuing kickoff, a lightning strike was detected and the game was delayed for 30 minutes.
After an exchange of punts, Chris Inge (Deptford, N.J./Williamstown) knocked the ball loose on a third-and-8 that Matt Quattrone (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) recovered to set up first down at the Moravian 15.
The Green Terror had to settle for a Spencer Wiersberg (Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett) 25-yard field goal, knotting the game at 6-all with 47 ticks remaining in the first quarter.
The Greyhounds took advantage of two short fields in the second quarter to take a 20-6 lead into halfime.
Mike Hayes scored on a 14-yard keeper with 7:01 to play and then found Aaron Hudson from 12 yards out with 2:41 showing.
Negron scored from five yards out with 11:23 to play in the third quarter to make it a 26-6 game before another errant snap on the ensuing PAT.
This time McCarthy lost the ball and it was batted around before Wayne Long (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) snatched the ball out of the air and made it to the other end zone to make it a 26-8 for the Green Terror's first defensive two points since 2010.
A Hayes-to-Redmond 40-yard pass play made it a 33-8 game nearly two minutes later.
Hayes found Jalen Snyder-Scipio for a 32-yard score midway through the fourth quarter for the final score.
Tyler DeMent (Olney, Md./Northwest) made six catches for 32 yards. Luke Fernandez (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) added eight tackles.
The Green Terror returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
