Rollins amasses 313 yards

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg rolled up 636 yards of total offense en route to a 50-28 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.

Joe Rollins (Temple Hills, Md./Surrattsville) racked up 313 yards himself, including 269 rushing yards on 32 carries to lead the Green Terror (1-4, 1-3 CC), who registered a season-high 436 yards of offense as a team.

Zach Miller led the Bullets (3-2, 2-2 CC) with 253 yards passing on 17 of 22, throwing for a pair of touchdowns. Aden Twer caught four of those passes, including a 61-yad touchdown late in the third quarter.

After three of the first four combined drives resulted in turnovers, McDaniel took over at its own six-yard line with 6:07 to play in the first quarter.

The Bullet defense forced a three and out, giving the offense the ball at the McDaniel 38. Seven plays later, Eddie Hutchins found the end zone from three yards out for a 7-0 lead.

Taking over at its own 25 with 2:28 on the clock, Ryan Yamada (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) engineered a six-play drive that closed out the first quarter.

A 19-yard pass play to Mike Oliveto (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) opened the drive before the quarterback found Nick O'Melia (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) for 20 yards four plays later and the Rollins capped off the drive with a 20-yard scamper for his first of three touchdowns, knotting the game at 7-all after the first quarter.

Gettysburg immediately responded, marching 63 yards in eight plays before Peter Fessenden found the end zone from six yards out with 12:27 showing.

Erric Massey-Rivers (Baltimore, Md./Reginald F. Lewis) forced a fumble on the next Bullet possession at the two-yard line. However, miscommunication on a deep pass attempt resulted in an intentional grounding call in the end zone to give Gettysburg two points and a 16-7 lead.

Tommy LeNoir returned the ensuing kickoff into Green Terror territory and a fasemask call put the ball at the McDaniel 31. Three plays later, Chris Amicone was in the end zone for a 23-7 lead.

A heavy dose of Rollins on the next drive, including runs of 11 and 32, helped the offense once again respond. On a direct snap to Rollins from one yard out, the senior tailback walked in to trim the deficit to 23-14.

Zach Miller, however, was able to find Alec Pacelli for a 25-yard touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone with 2.3 seconds left to make it a 30-14 game at the intermission.

A Miller five-yard run with 12:29 to play in the third quarter pushed the lead to 37-14 before Rollins ripped off runs of 21 and 49 before once again taking the direct snap and scoring from one yard out to respond and make it a 37-21 game with 10:59 on the clock.

Miller found Twer for the 61-yard touchdown connection with 4:34 left in the period before the Green Terror took over and grinded out 18 plays that consumed 8 minutes, 31 seconds and ended with Yamada hitting Sean Montgomery (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) for an eight-yard touchdown with 11:04 to play in the game.

Just 1:23 later, Hutchings found the end zone for the second time with a 26-yard run to set the final score.

Mike Cousar (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) led the defense with 15 tackles and a forced fumble while Claude-Michel Richardson (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added eight. Taylor Rush (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) chipped in seven tackles, a forced fumble and interception. Eddie Kendall (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Beach) added seven stops and a forced fumble.

O'Melia matched Rollins with 44 yards receiving while Oliveto had 43.

McDaniel is off next week before returning to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Oct. 19. Game time is 1 p.m.
