WESTMINSTER, Md. – Eleven members of the McDaniel softball team have been named 2018 Easton/National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Scholar-Athletes, released recently.
Seniors Carly Deichman (Easton, Pa./Freedom), Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), Valerie Lamb (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar), Ale Mata (Miramar, Fla./Cooper City) and Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) joined sophomores Paige Bleyer (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester), Megan Coyle (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman), Madisyn Johnson (Glen Rock, Pa./Dallastown Area), Cassie Rickrode (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) and Miranda Thompson (Columbia, Md./Atholton). Freshman Michaela Persinger (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) was also honored after one year on campus.
Deichman, a second baseman, started 32 of 33 games in which she appeared. She hit .307 with seven doubles and a home run. She drove in 10 runs and scored 14.
Hishon, a third baseman, started all 39 games in which she appeared and hit .336 on the year with nine doubles and three home runs. She had 27 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
Lamb, a pitcher, went 3-5 in the circle with a 4.03 ERA in 57 1/3 innings. She struck out 22 in 16 appearances.
Mata, an outfielder, started nine of 19 games in which she appeared. She had seven hits, including a home run and scored 10 runs.
Scardina, an outfielder, started 36 of the 39 games in which she appeared and hit .276. She had 32 hits and drove in 13 runs. She led the team with 29 runs scored.
Bleyer, a pitcher, appeared in six games and threw 13 1/3 innings.
Coyle, a catcher, started 34 of her 38 appearances and hit .365 on the year. She drove in 16 runs and scored 13 more. She had four doubles and a home run among her 38 hits.
Johnson, an outfielder, made five starts among her 21 appearances. She scored nine runs.
Rickrode, a pitcher, went 10-4 in the circle with a 2.70 ERA in 109 innings. She struck out 73 in 23 appearances. She also had a save and three shutouts.
Thompson, an infielder, appeared in 10 games with six starts.
Persinger, an outfielder, started 35 games among her 37 appearances. She hit .347 with four doubles and four home runs. She drove in 18 runs and scored 25.
In total, 1,600 Division III softball players were honored by the NFCA for having a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
The Green Terror finished the season 21-20-1 overall (12-4 CC) and advanced to the Centennial Conference tournament.
