WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel withstood a Johns Hopkins rally to post a 60-50 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory on Wednesday.
Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) recorded 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Green Terror (11-10, 8-7 CC), who moved into fifth place in the conference standings with three games to play. Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) added 16 points and nine rebounds.
Ryan Curren led the Blue Jays (10-11, 7-7 CC) with 13 points while Matt Billups and Kyle Doran added 10 each.
After a back-and-forth first eight minutes, Brooks drained his second 3-pointer of the night to give McDaniel a 12-10 lead with 11:33 and the hosts would not trail the rest of the night.
After a Doran trey closed the deficit to four, Brooks drained back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to double digits and force a Johns Hopkins timeout with 7:04 on the clock.
The Green Terror lead swelled as large as 11 en route to a 31-22 haftime edge.
A Royster layup with 13:00 on the clock made it a 39-26 game before Jesse Flannery hit a 3-pointer.
Nick Yockey (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) responded with a putback on the other end but then McDaniel went the next 7:10 without scoring.
The Blue Jays sliced the deficit to 41-39 before a Kevin Yrizarry (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) tipped a rebound trying to keep it alive that went into the basket.
Curren and Stewart traded layups before two Sam Gordon free throws once again made it a two-point game with 3:58 remaining.
Perugino drilled a baseline jumper to spark a 7-0 burst that sealed the win with 2:43 remaining.
McDaniel returns to action at Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
