WESTMINSTER, Md. – Washington (Md.) scored 12 runs in the eighth inning to come back and defeat McDaniel 20-12 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Tuesday.
Zachary Glover (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Green Terror (9-12, 3-8 CC) with three hits – one of five players with multiple hits.
Ryan Donnelly was 5-for-5 with two doubles and two triples for the Shoremen (22-11, 6-5 CC), scoring five runs.
Trailing 11-4, Donnelly led off the sixth inning with his second triple before scoring on a Matt Tancredi one-out double down the line.
Evan Hirschbaum followed with a double of his own after a wild pitch to make it an 11-6 game.
Donnelly led off an eighth inning that would eventually see 16 batters come to the plate with a double down the line.
Aaron Barclay followed with a bloop single to cut the deficit to 11-7 before a walk and two errors made it an 11-9 game with two on.
After a strikeout, CJ Gillmer singled up the middle and Joe Lozupone walked to load the bases.
Four straight singles turned the two-run deficit into a four-run lead before a Ryan Zwier two-out, three-run home run to right field stretched the advantage to 18-11.
A walk, hit batter, error and sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth pushed the lead to 20-11.
Mike Dunn (Lanham, Md./DeMatha) led off the bottom of the frame with a single to right before a two-out Kasey Nelson (St. Pete's Beach, Fla./St. Michael's [Md.]) single scored him with the game's final run.
Trailing 2-0, the Green Terror sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first to take an 8-2 advantage.
An error and Brett Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) coupled with a Nelson double tied the game.
Two more errors around a Glover single up the middle made it a 4-2 game.
Dunn roped a two-out double to right for a 6-4 advantage before an Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) single, stolen base and fifth Shoremen error capped the frame.
A Donnelly triple and Barclay RBI groundout made it an 8-3 game in the top of the second before Evan Finch (Laurel, Md./St. John's College) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fame and scored on a Colin Franke (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central) sacrifice fly to push the lead back to six.
Anderson drew a one-out walk in the third before stealing second and scoring on a Finch two-out knock to left.
The teams traded runs in the fourth on sacrifice flies to make it an 11-4 game.
Nelson, Finch, Dunn and T.J. McGuire (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) added two hits for McDaniel.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Penn State-Mont Alto on Wednesday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
