WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ursinus scored in the latter innings of both games to sweep a doubleheader at McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
The Bears (16-4, 5-0 CC) now stand as the only remaining conference undefeated team after recording a pair of 8-5 victories.
Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the Green Terror (8-14, 0-5 CC) with five hits on the afternoon.
Dom Fiorentino led Ursinus with six hits, including four knocks and three RBIs in game one.
Tied at 5-all in game one, CJ Diana led off the seventh with a double before scoring on a Austin Kurey single.
Doubles from Kieran Geyer and Dom Fiorentino in the eighth made it a 7-5 game before a Carter Usowski double and one-out Tom Carey single set the final margin.
A Fiorentino double and Alex Campbell single staked Urisnus to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Antonio Rosanova (Laurel, Md./DeMatha), Valori and Eric Grantland (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) strung together three straight singles to start the bottom of the third before Kasey Nelson (St. Pete Beach, Fla./St. Michaels [Md.]) singled for a 3-1 lead.
Singles by Fiorentino and Diana around a hit batter cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third.
A Fiorentino two-run double made it a 4-3 game in the top of the fourth before a Rosanova sacrifice fly and Valori double countered in the bottom of the frame to turn the one-run deficit into a one-run lead again.
The Bears used three straight singles in the top of the fifth to once again tie the game.
Valori had three hits in the opener while Nelson and Mike Dunn (Lanham, Md./DeMatha) each recorded two.
In the nightcap, it was a five-run sixth inning that broke open a one-run game.
Trailing 3-2, Campbell led off with a double. With runners at second and third, Usowski smacked a two-run double to make it a 4-3 Bear lead.
Carey followed with an RBI double of his own before a Travis Kozak two-run, two-out single capped the inning.
A pair of errors in the eighth inning help cut the deficit to 7-5 but a Fiorentino walk, stolen base and Campbell RBI single pushed the lead to three.
The Green Terror loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Lou Aikins got a strikeout and popup to earn the save.
Valori and Grantland each singled with one out in the first before a Nelson double and Michael Gallagher (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) sacrifice fly staked the hosts to a 2-0 lead.
Run-producing singles by Fiortentino and Campbell teid the game in the third before Nelson led off the fourth with a single and scored on a Brad Thaxton (Stevensville, Md./DeMatha) one-out double.
Valori, Grantladn and Nelson all had two hits in game two.
The Green Terror returns to action at No. 13 Johns Hopkins on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
