WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Coe used a six-run fifth inning to break game two open and complete a sweep of McDaniel in non-conference baseball action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday.
The Kohawks (6-2) took the opener 3-2 before completing the sweep with a 10-8 victory in game two.
Nick Valori (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the Green Terror (2-3) with four hits on the day, including a three-hit nightcap.
Jacob Burns led Coe with two hits in each game.
In a back-and-forth first game, Jacob Burns singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Andrew Brierton followed with a ground ball and beat out the potential double play before giving way to pinch-runner Cameron Frazier.
Jordan Kaplan sent a fly ball to the warning track but the outfielder could not make the catch and Frazier was able to score and give Coe a 4-3 lead.
McDaniel loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth but a fly ball to right field got Michael Golinski out of trouble and preserved the one-run lead.
The Green Terror took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Tyler O'Shea (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) singled down the left-field line with one out before an Eric Grantland (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) single and wild pitch put runners at second and third with two outs.
Valori drove a single through the left side to plate O'Shea for the early lead.
The Kohawks answered in the bottom of the inning with a Kevin DeLaney double and Burns single to start the frame.
An Isaac Evans walk, sacrifice bunt and Brierton RBI single put Coe on top 2-1 in the third.
McDaniel, however, had the answer with a Kaleb Reitz (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) one-out triple and a wild pitch.
In game two, Nolan Arp led off the top of the third with a single before beating a throw to second on an attempt to get the lead runner on a bunt. A throwing error on the next sacrifice attempt loaded the bases before a one-out, two-run Burns single to center gave the Kohawks a 2-0 lead.
Michael Gallagher (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) led off the bottom of the inning with a double before Mike Dunn (Laurel, Md./DeMatha) beat out a perfectly placed bunt to put runners at the corners.
After a stolen base and fielding error cut the deficit to 2-1, a squeeze play tied the game.
Kasey Nelson (St. Pete Beach, Fla./St. Michaels [Md.]) and Valori followed with back-to-back doubles for a 4-2 lead.
A Grant Henning bunt single and Arp double put runners at second and third in the top of the fourth for Jack Strellner, who singled down the line to score both runners and tie the game at 4-all.
A pair of errors extended the fifth inning, leading to four unearned runs. Henning had the big hit of the inning with a two-out, two-run single through a drawn-in right side of the infield, pushing the lead to 7-4. Burns capped the frame with an RBI single to make it a 10-4 game.
O'Shea worked a walk to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Grantland added a single to put runners at first and second.
Nelson followed with a double to the gap to cut the deficit to 10-6.
Nelson and Valori led off the seventh with singles before Reitz was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate.
An RBI groundout and wild pitch cut the deficit to 10-8 but Lucas Robbins got a groundball right back to him to earn his second save of the season.
Nelson had three hits and three RBIs in game two.
The Green Terror returns to action against Western New England on Sunday. Game time is 10 a.m.
