Mass-Dartmouth plated five runs in the fifth to key 7-3 win over McDaniel
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Matt Ryan recorded two hits, three RBIs and a run scored to lead Mass-Dartmouth to a 7-3 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action at the 2011 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Sunday.
James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) led the Green Terror (2-3) with a 2-for-3 day, adding two RBIs.
Zak Talis added two hits and three RBIs for the Corsairs (2-1), who also received a pair of knocks from Dan DeMello and Cory Albnese.
Knotted at 2-all going to the bottom of the fifth, Albnese led off with a single before back-to-back errors loaded the bases.
A Ryan single knocked in a Albnese and Ryan McDermott for a 4-2 lead, forcing a McDaniel pitching change.
Talis followed with a two-run double before a walk, fielder's choice and Ryan Levesque RBI single pushed the lead to 7-2.
A Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) single and Chiorello RBI double closed the deficit to 7-3 in the eighth but Mass-Dartmouth escaped the inning with no further damage.
Bedward Ortiz recorded three strikeouts in the ninth inning to work out of a bases-loaded jam, preserving the win.
A John Granahan walk, stolen base and Talis RBI single staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first.
Three straight singles, including an RBI knock from Ryan doubled the advantage in the third.
Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) led off the fourth with a single before a Christopher single put runners at second and third.
Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the runners at second and third before Kline scored on a Chiorello sacrifice fly.
A wild pitch brought Christopher in from third to tie the game.
McDaniel returns to action against Stevens on Monday. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
