McDaniel opens Florida trip with sweep of Albright

LAKELAND, Fla. – James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) went a combined 5-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead McDaniel to a doubleheader sweep of Albright on the team's first day at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (2-2) took the opener 8-3 before rallying with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two.

Justin Danser led the Lions (1-4) with a 6-for-7 showing, adding two RBIs and two runs scored.

In game one, McDaniel built a 5-0 lead over the first two inning en route to its first victory of the season.

After Zach Jones (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) pitched around a pair of singles with three of his 10 strikeouts, Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) was hit by a 2-2 pitch to lead off the bottom of the first before stealing second with one out.

A Marshall Betts (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) single through the left side put runners at the corners before Chiorello knocked in Kline with a single up the middle.

Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) followed with a single of his own to score Betts for a 2-0 lead.

Ryan Byrnes (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) reached on an error to lead off the home second before Matthew Bodnar (Douglasville, Pa./Central Catholic) singled to put runners at the corners.

A Kline double cleared the bases and allowed the senior to move to third. A Patrick Christopher (Union Beach, N.J./St. John Vianney) RBI groundout stretched the lead to 5-0 before Matt Rehrig worked out of a bases-loaded jam.

A Kyle McGee sacrifice fly and Nate Peiffer RBI single plated Danser and Tom Canuso to trim the deficit to 5-2 in the fourth.

Christopher led off the home sixth with a single before moving to second on a Betts sacrifice bunt and scoring on a Chiorello single to center.

A Najera single and wild pitch put runners at second and third before Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) roped a two-out double into left field to push the lead to 8-2.

A Pat Brady two-out single and Danser double closed the deficit to 8-3 before Gio Fricchione (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern) hit the next batter but then induced a groundball to preserve the win.

Jones allowed six hits and fanned double digits for the second time in his career, working the first six innings on the hill.

Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh inning of the nightcap, Chiorello led off with a single before giving way to pinch-runner Jeff Davis (Newtown, Conn./Fairfield Prep).

Paul Labe picked Davis off first base for the first out of the inning before Najera and Matthew Pace (Baltimore, Md./North County) recorded back-to-back singles.

Longo followed with a single of his own to score Najera and knot the game at 3-all.

With two outs, Byrnes singled through the right side. A wild pitch moved Longo to third before Byrnes stole second.

Tyler Meckley, on in relief of Labe, induced a groundball by Bodnar but an error allowed Longo and Byrnes to score for the 5-3 lead.

Andrew Monger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) worked around a two-out hit by pitch and single to pick up his first collegiate win. Monger struck out four, including to end the game, in two innings of relief work.

A Longo leadoff home run in the third inning staked McDaniel to 1-0 lead before a Jojo Fischer single and Danser double evened the game in the bottom of the frame.

Chiorello countered with the Green Terror's second long ball in as many innings to reestablish the one-run advantage.

A leadoff walk and Fischer sacrifice fly evened the score in the bottom of the fifth before Danser led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a Canuso double.

Bodnar and Najera added four hits apiece on the day for McDaniel while Longo had three. The Green Terror outhit the Lions 15-8 in game one while Albright finished game two with a slim 10-9 advantage in the hit column.

McDaniel returns to action against Mass.-Dartmouth on Sunday. Game time is 9:30 a.m.
