Catholic rides five-run sixth to 6-3 win over McDaniel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Brendan Breslin went 3-for-4, including a two-run triple to key a five-run sixth inning that propelled Catholic to a 6-3 victory over McDaniel in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

The Green Terror (0-2) rapped out 10 hits, including a 2-for-3 performance from Jimmy Najera (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha), but left seven runners on base.

Robin Mowatt went five strong inning for the Cardinals (3-1), scattering six hits to pick up his first win of the season.

Matt Grieb and Tim Mierzwa drew back-to-back walks to lead off the home sixth. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Dave Grear singled home Grieb to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Marc Hanna followed with a single to center to stretch the lead to 3-1 before Breslin's triple cleared the bases and chased Andrew Monger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) with a 5-1 lead.

A Marc Kalokitis RBI groundout pushed the lead to 6-1.

Trailing 6-1 entering the ninth, James Chiorello (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) led off with a double.

Sean Lamarre (Woodbine, Md./Calvert Hall) and Najera drew back-to-back walks to load the bases before a Chris Longo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) single to left drove home Chiorello and chased Alec Fenstermacher after just four batters and no outs.

Jack Mahoney recorded a strikeout to the first batter he faced before giving up a Tyler Jackow (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) RBI single to put the tying run on base.

Mahoney, however, induced a game-ending double-play ball to pick up the save.

A LJ Tavaglia walk, stolen base, wild pitch and two-out Breslin single staked Catholic to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Brandon Kline (Myersville, Md./Middletown) led off the sixth with a double before scoring on an error one batter later to knot the game at 1-all.

Jackow and Kline added two hits apiece for McDaniel.

The Green Terror returns to action in a home doubleheader against Delaware Valley on Saturday. The first game begins at 12 p.m.
