WASHINGTON, D.C. – McDaniel jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the deciding set to key a 3-2 win over Gallaudet in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday.
Marlowe Embry (Milpitas, Calif./J.H. Pitman) led the Green Terror (8-1) with her fourth double-double in nine collegiate matches, recording a team-best 18 kills to go with 15 digs.
Adele Daniels and Darriyan Thomas led the Bison (4-5) with double-doubles of their own. Daniels led the attack with 20 kills, adding 17 digs while Thomas chipped in 17 kills and 23 digs.
Gallaudet took the opening set 25-17 before McDaniel evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. The Bison won by an identical score in the third set and the Green Terror forced the fifth set with a 25-20 victory in Set No. 4. McDaniel ultimately claimed the match with a 15-9 win in the final set.
Embry and Emma Lorenzen (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) combined for five kills in the 8-2 start to the fifth set. After the teams changed sides, Giuletta Maucere and Embry traded kills to keep it a six-point lead.
Another Maucere kill and block by Daniels and Shua Clay trimmed the deficit to 11-7 but the hosts could get no closer.
A Gayle Edelstein (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) ace and kill helped close out the match.
Three kills by Daniels helped Gallaudet open up a 7-1 lead in the first set. The Green closed to within 14-10 on a Teryn Rath (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) but back-to-back kills from Daniels and Karita Lewis stretched the lead back to six en route to the eight-point win.
In the second set, McDaniel trailed 21-17 before a pair of Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) helped key an 8-1 finish to the set for the three-win win.
Neither team led by more than two points in the third set until four straight Green Terror points opened up a 20-16 lead for the visitors. Tied at 22-all, kills from Daniels and Thomas coupled with an attack error gave the hosts a 2-1 lead in the match.
Two kills each from Embry and Lugar ignited an 8-2 start to fourth set. The lead swelled to 11-3 on three straight Embry knockdowns. The Bison closed to within 19-18 but a Lorenzen kill staved off the rally and sparked a 6-2 close to the set.
With a 36-dig performance on the night, Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) moved into the top-10 in program history. Three days after becoming the 13th Green Terror player with 1,000 digs, she now sits at 1,057 to rank 10th all-time. She also added two aces on Tuesday.
Isabel Paci (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) and Hayley Mills (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) added nine kills each. Paci chipped in 10 digs while Kendall Hanak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) contributed 19 digs. Wells added 25 assists to the attack while Edelstein added 23 assists.
