WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel took a pair of close sets to close out a 3-0 win over Goucher and salvage a split in home volleyball action on Saturday.
In the Centennial Conference (CC), the Green Terror (4-3, 0-1 CC) dropped a 3-0 decision to Muhlenberg before rallying to down the Gophers (6-5) in straight sets.
Caroline Savin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) led McDaniel on the day, notching 23 kills while hitting .553 in the two matches. She also added three total blocks.
Sarah Weyhmuller paced the Mules (6-4, 1-0 CC) in the conference opener with 10 kills while Chelsea Kaser added 15 digs. Muhlenberg took the first two sets by matching 25-15 scores before edging McDaniel 25-23 in the third set.
Megan Chalk led Goucher with 15 kills and 13 digs. McDaniel took the opening set of that match 25-16 before opening up a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. In the final set, Savin capped off a 27-25 victory with her 12th kill of the match.
In the opening set of the first match, the Mules reeled off 10 straight points to turn a 7-5 edge into a 17-5 lead.
Back-to-back Vanessa Pulice aces keyed a 7-0 run that turned a 12-11 lead into a 19-11 advantage in the second set.
In the third set, a Savin kill and attacking error by Muhlenberg evened the score at 23-all before a Joanne Josephson kill and McDaniel error closed out the match.
In addition to Savin's 14 kills, Kloe Martin (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) and Madeline Rose (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor High) added six kills apiece. Colette Kellen (Derwood, Md./Covenant Life) chipped in 19 assists while Genna Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) steadied the defense with 16 digs.
Against Goucher, back-to-back Savin kills keyed a 13-2 stretch that turned a 12-9 deficit into a 22-14 lead en route to the 25-16 set-one win.
In the second set, the Gophers reeled off six straight points to take a 21-19 lead before a Rose kill closed the deficit to one.
Trailing 23-21, a Rose-Kellen block pulled the hosts back within one before Rose took the serve and evened the set with an ace. A Martin kill and Gopher attack error gave McDaniel the set win.
In the final set, neither team led by more than three points before Savin finally closed it out with back-to-back kills.
Rose finished with 12 kills and six digs to go with five total blocks against the Gophers. Kellen had 20 assists and six digs. Weger led the defense with 17 digs.
The Green Terror concludes the home-and-home series with Goucher in Towson on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
