Bearcats notch sweep in Green Terror opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Christina Pierre recorded a match-high 17 kills to lead Baruch to a 3-0 win over McDaniel in non-conference volleyball action on Friday.

The Bearcats (1-1) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first set before holding off a rally for a 25-20 win. Baruch extended the match lead to 2-0 with a 25-16 victory in the second set before the Green Terror (0-1) opened up a 13-7 lead in the third set. The Bearcats stormed back with 18 of the final 21 points for a 25-16 win.

Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) led McDaniel in its season opener with 14 kills, five digs and four total blocks.

Four straight Martina Mickoservice points, including back-to-back Pierre kills turned a 2-1 Bearcat lead into a 6-1 advantage.

A Rebecca Peralta ace – one of 11 by Baruch in the match – extended the lead to 11-2 and forced a Green Terror timeout.

Two of Annie McShea's (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) five kills and a Jackie Hawkins (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) ace helped draw McDaniel within 11-7 but the Bearcats extended the lead to as many as 10 at 21-11.

A Kelly Toms (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) ace capped a 6-0 run to close the deficit to 21-17 and the Green Terror drew to within 22-19 but Baruch tallied three of the final four points for the win.

In the second set, the Bearcats gradually extended the lead en route to a nine-point victory before Sara Erlichman (Bedford, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) keyed an early Green Terror run in the third set with five straight service points to open a 6-1 lead.

A Katie Ferguson (Dover, Pa./Northern York) ace helped extend the lead to 10-4 and a Hawkins kill made it 13-7 before the Bearcats started their rally.

Melinda Santiago, who finished with 30 assists and four aces, notched an ace to knot the set at 15 and nearly single-handedly pushed the Baruch lead to 23-15 en route to the 25-16 win.

Hawkins recorded 17 assists and five digs. Ferguson steadied the defense with seven digs while Sarah Byron (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) added six. Sarah Mason (Westminster, Md./Westminster) had five digs.
