McDaniel splits on first day of Worthington Classic
Green Terror downs Florham in five before falling to St. Vincent
WASHINGTON, D,C. - Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded 34 kills in two matches to lead McDaniel to a 1-1 start to the Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet in non-conference volleyball action on Friday.
The Green Terror (12-8) downed FDU-Florham (14-9) in its first match of the two-day tournament, 3-2. The Devils took the opening set 25-16 before McDaniel evened the match with a 25-15 win and took a 2-1 lead with a 25-17 win in set three. FDU-Florham notched a 27-25 victory to force the deciding set, where McDaniel took the two-point decision, 15-13.
Herrgott and Anne McShea (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) each recorded 14 kills in the match. Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) contributed 19 assists while Jackie Hawkins (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added 17.
Katie Ferguson (Dover, Pa./Northern York) steadied the defense with 23 digs. Herrgott added five total blocks while Sara Hanlon (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) chipped in four blocks.
Against St. Vincent (16-6), the Bearcats took the first set 25-14 before the Green Terror evened the match with a 25-222 win. St. Vincent closed out the match with wins of 25-20 and 25-15, respectively.
Herrgott hit .447 with 20 kills in the match. Nuckles and Hawkins contributed 17 and 14 assists, respectively, to the offense.
Ferguson recorded 24 digs.
The Green Terror returns to action on the second day of the tournament at Gallaudet. Action begins at 9 a.m.
