Herrgott powers McDaniel to 3-1 win over Ursinus
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded a career-high 24 kills to power McDaniel to a 3-1 victory over Ursinus in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Friday.
The Bears (6-13, 1-6 CC) took a close victory in the first set 26-24 before the Green Terror (10-14, 3-3 CC) rallied to win three straight, 25-13, 25-21, 25-14.
Mary Kate Wilmoth and Elizabeth Roth paced Ursinus with 20 and 18 kills, respectively.
Herrgott added an ace and two blocks while hitting .550 in the match. Kristin Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) and Kristie Fourcade (Ijamsville, Md./St. Johns at Prospect Hall) contributed to the offense with 21 and 15 assists, respectively.
Katie Ferguson (Dover, Pa./Northern York) and Nuckles steadied the McDaniel defense with a combined 36 digs.
Jennifer Fargo added 36 assists, three aces and 10 digs for the Bears while Roth and Wilmoth both rounded out double-doubles with 16 and 14 digs, respectively.
Trailing 8-4 in the first set, one of Fargo’s aces keyed a 4-0 run that knotted the set at 8. Neither team could open up a lead of more than two points the rest of the way but it was Ursinus getting the final two points on kills by Roth and Wilmoth.
Five Bear errors in the first nine points of the second set allowed McDaniel to build an early 8-1 advantage en route to the 17-point victory.
Trailing 6-0 out of the gate in the third set, three kills apiece from Roth and Wilmoth pulled Ursinus within 10-9 but both of Lanni Reisinger’s (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar Cliff) service aces came within the next four points to push the lead back to 14-9.
A Kelly Hoiser block – the Bears’ only of the match – closed the gap to 14-11 but the visitors could get no closer the rest of the way.
The two teams traded the first 14 points of the fourth set before a pair of Sara Hanlon (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) gave the Green Terror some breathing room, 11-7.
Clinging to a 14-12 edge, McDaniel reeled off the next seven points and 11 of the match’s final 13 capped by Amy Tignanelli’s (Baltimore, Md./The Catholic High School of Baltimore) lone service ace of the match.
McDaniel returns to action at Gettysburg on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
