McDaniel downs Goucher in five-set thriller

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded 23 kills and six total blocks to lead McDaniel to a 3-2 victory over Goucher in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday.

            The Green Terror (5-3) won the first set 25-19 before the Gophers (1-6) took a 2-1 lead in the match behind 25-21 and 25-20 victories, respectively. McDaniel tallied the final five points of the fourth set to force its fifth five-set match of the season before taking the deciding set, 16-14.
            Jenna Filipone (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) finished with a double-double for the Green Terror, recording 10 kills and a match high-tying 18 digs.
            Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) added a season-high 50 assists, 18 digs and five service aces.
            Nuckles, behind three kills from Herrgott, served McDaniel to a 6-0 lead in the first set en route to the six-point win.
            In the second set, Kasey Quinn put down back-to-back service aces to give Goucher an 8-5 advantage in the match and the visitors staved off the Green Terror down the stretch.
            Knotted at 16-all in the third set, two Catie Ditmore kills gave the Gophers a two-point cushion en route to the five-point win.
            Trailing 22-20 in the fourth set, Herrgott and Kelly Toms (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) recorded two kills apiece as part of a 5-0 rally to force the deciding set.
            Trailing 11-7 in set five, Sara Hanlon (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) finished a Nuckles set out of a Green Terror timeout to start a 6-2 run that Nuckles capped with her fifth ace of the night.
            After a Herrgott kill set up match point for McDaniel, Goucher got a Ditmore finish out of a timeout to knot the match at 14-all.
            A service error gave Filipone the serve for a second match point and Herrgott delievered on a Nuckles set to win the match.
            The Green Terror returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at home against Muhlenberg on Sept. 20. Match time is 1 p.m.
