O'Meara, Pollard win in straight sets

TOWSON, Md. – Three of the four McDaniel singles players to compete at the 2012 Goucher Open won a match on Sunday in women's tennis action over the weekend.

Laura Pollard (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) won the seventh-place match in the second flight to lead the Green Terror. After dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Rutgers-Camden's Morgan Kelly to open play, Pollard fell to Caroline Lockwood (Gwyndd-Mercy) 6-3, 6-2.

Pollard wrapped up her weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Cedar Crest's Rakia Otoo.

In Flight IV, Elise O'Meara (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) added a straight-set victory in the seventh-place match. O'Meara opened by dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Neumann's Teresa Kozin before Lily Horner (Messiah) edged O'Meara 7-5 in the opening set of their consolation semifinal match and completed the straight-set win, 6-0.

O'Meara concluded her weekend with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Cedar Crest's Maria Vincent.

Kiersten Patron (Timonium, Md./Dulaney), playing in the first flight, dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Gwynedd-Mercy's Rachel Fine and a 6-3, 6-2 match to Moravian's Erica Venuti.

In the seventh-place match, Patron took the opening set 6-3 before Cedar Crest's Jenny Clay forced a deciding set by the same margin. Patron prevailed in the super-tiebreaker, 13-11.

Chelsea Barnett (Hanover, Pa./South Western) rounded out McDaniel competitors in singles play, dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Goucher's Alex Walsh and 6-0, 6-0 decision to Neumann's Gabrielle Porcelli in the third flight.

On the doubles side of the draw, Sophie White (York, Pa./York Catholic) and Lauren Lewis (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) played in the first flight while Nicole Arnold (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Angela Johnson teamed in the second flight.

White and Lewis dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Cassadra Bejar and Amy Frey (Cedar Crest) to open play before Lazio Hanna and Holly Billings (Messiah) prevailed 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation semifinals.

White and Lewis took the opening set off Kelly Bates and Katy Read (Rutgers-Camden) 7-5 before falling 6-1 in the second set. Bates and Read edged White and Lewis 11-9 in the deciding set.

Arnold and Johnson dropped three straight-set matches in a round-robin Flight II.

The Green Terror concludes the fall schedule at home against Trinity (D.C.) on Saturday. Match time is 1 p.m.
