Pollard posts shutout at fourth singles

BALTIMORE, Md. – McDaniel swept its way through doubles play in the first match of the season, keying a 7-2 non-conference women's tennis win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Monday.

Laura Pollard (Federalsburg, Md./Colonel Richardson) led the Green Terror (1-0) with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles to cap a 2-0 day for the freshman.

Kelcy Bye and Amanda Fansler recorded the two points for the Gators (2-5-1), winning at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Pollard teamed with Kiersten Patron (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) for an 8-3 win at second doubles while Elise O'Meara (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Nicole Arnold (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) paired for an 8-2 win in the No. 3 slot.

Carissa Grove (Boonsboro, Md./St. Maria Goretti) and Brittany Starlings (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) needed a tiebreaker to complete the doubles sweep, taking a 7-3 decision in the tiebreaker to win, 9-8.

Starlings, O'Meara and Arnold capped double winners for McDaniel.

Starlings was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at third singles while O'Meara won 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth spot. Arnold won by walkover at No. 6.

Bye led Notre Dame with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles while Fansler took a 10-4 win a super tiebreak deciding set to establish the final margin. Fansler and Patron split identical 6-2 scores in the first two sets.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Lancaster Bible on Wednesday. Match time is 3 p.m.
