Green Terror finish seven at annual meet

LANCASTER, Pa. – Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events to lead McDaniel to a seventh-place finish at the 2010 Franklin & Marshall Invitational in women's swimming action on Saturday and Sunday.

The Green Terror finished with 212 points in the 10-team invitational. Kutztown took the team title with 713.5 points, outdistancing Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg. The host Diplomats were second with 571 points while the Bullets finished third with 474.5.

Walega swam a personal-best time of 2:28.81 to win the 200 breaststroke, a time which ranks second all-time in program history. She also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.93, missing the NCAA Division III B-Cut time by 0.36 seconds. Walega was also 15th in the 50 free (26.03 seconds).

Emma Duesterhaus (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg Day) added a pair of top-10 finishes and top-10 program marks. She was fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.11, which ranks fourth all-time for McDaniel. She touched ninth in the 100 free with a time of 56.23. She was also 13th in the 50 free with a time of 25.84 – good for eighth all-time on the Green Terror performer list

Kerrie Vanscoy (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) scored in a pair of events for McDaniel. She was 11th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.67 and 14th in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:20.13. The 200 time ranks fifth all-time for the Green Terror.

The 200 medley relay team of Vanscoy, Walega, Brittney Lenz (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Duesterhaus recorded the top placefinish of the five relays, touching fourth in a time of 1:52.60. The group also finished sixth in the 400 medley relay (4:11.26).

Walega and Duesterhaus joined Abbie Schickler (Montgomery Village, Md./Covenant Life) and Megan Giroux (Damascus, Md./Damascus) for a fifth-place showing in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:43.70. The quartet was also fifth in the 400 free relay (3:47.77).

The Green Terror returns to action in the home opener against Dickinson on Jan. 15. Meet time is 2 p.m.
