A fresh start under a new leader
WESTMINSTER, Md. – There will be a few uncertainties when the McDaniel men's and women's swimming teams open their seasons at Swarthmore on Saturday.
One of those is a new chief mentor with Jeff Hiestand taking over the reins. Hiestand is no stranger to the program, spending the last nine after nine years as an assistant on the staff of Kim Easterday, who retired after 33 seasons at the helm.
Hiestand also returns a handful of key members from 2009-10 led by Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissachickon) – a two-time Centennial Conference champion in the 100 breaststroke.
The first-year head man's first recruiting class bolstered both rosters to add depth in hopes of building a Green Terror program that will be able to compete for a conference championship. The men's team opens the year with 12 swimmers while the women's team opens with a 14-person roster – both increases over the last few seasons.
