Swarthmore downs McDaniel in CC opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Chelsea Brett won three times to lead Swarthmore to a 112-84 women’s swimming victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

            The Garnet (2-0, 1-0 CC) won eight of the first nine events to hand the Green Terror (0-1, 0-1 CC) a loss in its opener.
            On the men’s side, Swarthmore (1-1, 1-0 CC) took a 101-83 victory over McDaniel (0-1, 0-1 CC), despite the Green Terror’s six victories in 10 competed events.
            Stephen Gomez (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) was a triple winner for McDaniel while James Eu (Reston, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) earned two victories.
            The Garnet, who got two wins from Douglas Gilcrest-Scott and Tim Brevart, touched first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.13 to open the meet.
            Morgan DeHart (Salisbury, Md./Wiciomico) won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:52.26 before Gomez touched first in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.68.
            Gomez added victories in the 100 butterfly (56.31) and 500 free (5:16.45). Eu touched first in the 200 IM (2:07.24) and won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.37).
            For the women, Brett anchored the 200 medley relay for Swarthmore, which won the opening event with a time of 1:58.37.
            Brett also won the two sprint races, touching first in the 50 free (26.45) and 100 free (57.74).
            Casey Osborn and Allie Jordan, who were part of the 200 medley win, added victories in the 200 IM (2:21.59) and 100 butterfly (1:01.81), respectively.
            Jessica Fry (St. Mary’s, Ga./Camden County) and Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) earned the Green Terror’s two individual victory. Fry touched first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:17.29 while Walega was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.62.
            Fry was also part of the 200 free relay team that won with a time of 1:52.13.
            McDaniel returns to action at Gettysburg on Wednesday. Meet time is 7 p.m.
