WESTMINSTER, Md. – Franklin & Marshall scored twice in a 2-minute, 21-second span to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat McDaniel 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action on Wednesday.
Meghan Sturgill (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led the Green Terror (4-1, 1-1 CC) with her team-leading third goal of the season.
Carley Nicholson and Nancy Epstein tallied for the Diplomats (1-2-2, 1-1 CC), who got four saves from Amanda McGowan, including one on a second Sturgill penalty-kick attempt with 1:18 to play.
In a defensive battle that featured just nine shots by each team, McDaniel struck first when Julia Pope (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) was taken down in front of the goal in the 77th minute. Sturgill stepped to the ball and knocked the ball into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Exactly two minutes later, Nicholson chipped a ball that Allyson Reid sent into the box over everyone to knot the game.
The goal snapped a 284-minute, 35-second stretch without allowing a goal by the Green Terror defense.
In the 81st minute, Epstein knocked a ball in from 35 yards out that bounced off the crossbar and down into the net, putting McDaniel in its first deficit of the season.
Jan Woolley (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), the reigning CC Defensive Player of the Week, made five saves on the day.
The Green Terror returns to action in its first road game of the season at Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 12 p.m.
