Fountain of youth

WESTMINSTER, Md. – On a 25-person soccer roster, one might see 11 newcomers and be a bit worried. That's not necessarily true in the case of McDaniel women's soccer, however.

Due at least in part to a lack of depth in 2010, the Green Terror finished last in the conference in goals per game, averaging just 0.62 goals per game. However, an expanded roster that includes a pair of transfers with Carroll County roots gives the team optimism aplenty that the squad can improve on that showing and find the back of the net more often in 2011.

With those two, seven of the 11 players not on the 2010 roster graduated from a Carroll County high school. Add to that mix junior Liz Beall (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and the total is eight players from a county that has no fewer than six state semifinal appearances in recent years.

Now-junior netminder Jan Woolley (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) performed admirably in her first season as the starting goalkeeper, pacing the Centennial Conference with 146 saves.

The ability to push more this year, however, will likely take some of the pressure off Woolley and the defense to be 100 percent perfect for 90 minutes.

McDaniel returns its top two goal scorers in Hilary Hanus (Hockessin, Del./Cab Calloway School of the Arts) and Beall. The duo were the only two Green Terror players with multiple goals a season ago, tallying three and two, respectively.
