Wuest wins by major decision in conference opener

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Stevens won six of the first seven bouts to open up a 27-6 lead en route to a 27-16 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling opener for both teams on Saturday at Gettysburg.

Ronnie Wuest (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led the Green Terror (4-3, 0-1 CC) with a major decision victory at 184.

Joey Borai led the 21st-ranked Ducks (6-3, 1-0 CC), opening action with a 2-minute, 27-pin at 125.

Troy Stanich extended the lead to 9-0 with a 9-2 win at 133 before Jahmally Willie (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) won by forfeit at 141 to close the deficit to 9-6.

Dylan Van Sickell started a four-bout run for Stevens with a 13-5 victory at 149 before Zach Wilhelm added a first-period fall at 157 for a 19-6 lead.

Josh Smith added a 17-2 win at 165 and Carl Vasti won 9-3 at 174 to secure the match.

Wuest won 11-2 at 184 before Jake Pooton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) prevailed 3-1 in the first sudden-victory period.

Brendan Woody (Crofton, Md./South River) rounded out the day, edging out a 3-2 win at heavyweight.

McDaniel was also scheduled to wrestle Merchant Marine as part of the trimatch but that match was postponed after the shutdown of the federal government prevented the Mariners from traveling. There is no rescheduled date for the match at this time.

The Green Terror returns to Gettysburg for a dual match with the Bullets on Thursday. Match time is 7 p.m.
