Goretsas notches two decisions

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Mason Goretsas (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) notched a pair of decision victories to lead McDaniel to a split in a home tri-match with Washington and Lee and Merchant Marine Academy in Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (5-4, 1-1 CC) opened its day with a 42-3 win over the Generals (0-8, 0-2 CC) before the Mariners (3-5, 2-1 CC) rallied to notch a 30-21 victory and cap a 2-0 day. Merchant Marine topped Washington and Lee 53-0 in the day's other match.

Against the Generals, Eddie Miller (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) and Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) all notched forfeits to stake McDaniel to an 18-0 lead.

Goretsas notched a 9-1 major decision in the first contested match of the day at 149.

Josh Moore (Dover, Del./North Caroline [Md.]) added a 16-5 win before Jacob Reik (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Annes County) each recorded decisions to make it a 32-0 lead. Reik won 8-6 while Cross took a 9-6 decision.

Zan Reed notched W&L's lone win of the match 10-6 at 184.

Ricky Tisinger (Edinburg, Va./Stonewall Jackson) won 15-2 at 197 before Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) closed the match with a 1-minute, 29-second fall.

Trailing 15-6, the Mariners reeled off five straight victories to record the victory.

Branden Yeik edged Logan Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) 10-9 at 157 before Jake Walker was awarded an injury default during the match at 165, knotting the match at 15-all.

Josh Miller followed with another six-pointer, notching a fall in 1:43 before Greg Potemken made it 24-15 match with a 9-6 win at 184.

Tyler Russell sealed the win with a fall in 1:56 before Joe Camlin (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) set the final margin with a 2-minute, 11-second pin.

Costas opened the match with a fall in 2:53 before O'Boyle took his second forfeit of the day to make ita  6-all match.

Mitchell won by fall in 2:13 at 141 and Goretsas recorded a 10-8 victory at 149.

The Green Terror returns to action at Stevens in a trimatch with Muhlenberg on Saturday. Action begins at 11 a.m.
