Senior records best finish ever for McDaniel wrestler
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) won his first two matches on Friday to secure All-America status then went 2-1 on Saturday to finish third at heavyweight at the 2011 NCAA Division III wrestling championship hosted by Wis.-La Crosse.
Making his third appearance at the national tournament, Glotfelty dropped a 3-2 decision in the semifinal match before winning two matches in the consolation bracket to secure the Green Terror's best individual finish at the wrestling championship.
The senior, seeded fourth at heavyweight, received a bye in the first round before defeating Williams' Tom Foote 10-4 to move into the quarterfinals.
In the night session, Glotfelty moved into the championship semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Centenary's Joseph Zitone to secure the top-eight finish necessary to become an All-American.
On Saturday, Glotfelty earned a second-period escape before top-seeded John Helgerson (Wartburg) recorded a takedown. A second Glotfelty escape in the period sent the bout to the third period knotted at 2-all. Helgerson escaped from his choice of the down position to advance to the title bout.
In the consolation semfinals against Wisconsin-La Crosse's William Mayer, Glotfelty broke a 2-all deadlock with a takedown in the third period to advance to the third-place bout, assuring he would at least match the program's best individual finish.
In the third-place match, Glotfelty earned a takedown early in the first period before allowing an escape by Concordia-Moorehead's Tom Bouressa to make it a 2-1 match heading the second.
Glotfelty chose the down position and earned a quick escape to push the advantage to 3-1.
In the third, Bouressa escaped then was awarded a penalty point after a second stall warning was issued to even the match at 3-all in the final 30 seconds. However, Glotfelty had racked up 3 minutes, 35 seconds of time advantage to notch the win, finishing his senior season on a high note and with a record of 34-3.
Glotfelty is the program's all-time wins leader, finishing his career with a record of 126-23.
