Seven-goal run carries No. 10 Catholic to 15-9 win over McDaniel

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mary Swarthout scored five goals, including three times during a 7-0 run that turned a tie game into a 9-3 lead, propelling 10th-ranked Catholic to a 15-9 win over McDaniel in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday.

Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) scored three times in her final game for the Green Terror (2-14) while Chelsea Watkins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) added a hat trick of her own.

Swarthout added a pair of assists – both during the game-clinching run – while Lindsay Davenport chipped in four goals for the Cardinals (10-3), who finished with a 37-24 advantage in shots, including 20-6 during the decisive first half.

Tied at 2-all after Watkins and Jurd bookended a pair of Catholic goals, Katie Buonpastore put the hosts in front to stay with 24:48 to play.

Watkins scored off a Brittany Lines just 52 seconds into the game before Davenport finished from Buonpastore with 26:36 on the clock to tie the game.

Brady needed just 10 seconds to make it a 2-1 game before Jurd tied the game for the final time with 24:57 on the clock.

Buonpastore reestablished the lead just 11 seconds later.

A pair of Swarthout goals pushed the lead to 5-2 with 19:26 to play before Davenport and Buonpastore made it 7-2 just over nine minutes later.

Swarthout pushed the lead to 8-2 at the break, scoring from Buonpastore with 9:06 to play in the first half.

Davenport finished from Swarthout just 11 seconds into the second half before Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) broke up the run with 22:11 to play.

Kelly Ryan and Jurd exchanged tallied just 1:26 apart to keep it a six-goal game before Swarthout and Chelsea Gleason scored 1:40 apart to make it 12-4 with 15:14 to play.

Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) and Davenport traded markers.

Jurd and two straight Watkins goals closed the deficit to 13-8 with 7:48 showing but Meghan Brady and Swarthout scored 23 seconds apart to make it 15-8 with 3:26 remaining.

Messersmith capped the scoring with a free-position goal at the 2:52 mark.
