Muhlenberg uses 8-0 run to key 17-6 victory over McDaniel
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Danielle Rosen tallied five goals and two assists to lead Muhlenberg to a 17-6 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Angela Napoletano added four goals and two assists for the Mules (5-6, 1-4 CC), who used an 8-0 run that spanned both halves to notch their initial conference win of the season.
Brittany Lines (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led the Green Terror (1-11, 1-6 CC) with two goals and an assist while Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) added a pair of markers to go with a program-record 11 draw controls.
Napoletano staked Muhlenberg to a 1-0 lead with a free-position goal just 21 seconds into the game before Lauren McCadden (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) responded 40 seconds later off a Lines feed to even the game at 1-all.
Christine Van Hise found Alexandra Gabriele and Rosen 7 minutes, 10 seconds apart to put the hosts on top 3-1 with 19:22 to play in the first half.
A Lisa Jurd (Columbia, Md./Hammond) goal with 14:09 on the clock closed the deficit to 3-2 before Rosen and Alex Bellini stretched the lead to 5-3 with 9:45 to play in the opening half.
Messersmith made it a 5-3 game just 26 seconds later before Gabriele sparked the game-clinching 8-0 run off the third of four Van Hise assists with 4:52 showing.
Rosen and Napoletano pushed the lead to 8-3 at the break before Maggie Sullivan started a five-goal stretch in a 9-minute, 45-second span, finishing a solo run just 1:58 into the second half.
Napoletano capped the burst with back-to-back tallies off both of Rosen's assists.
A Lines free-position goal with 17:33 to play halted a 22-minute, 46-second scoring drought for the visitors.
Bellini and Rosen stretched the advantage to 15-4 with 13:02 on the clock before the two teams exchanged goals in the final 6:25.
Messersmith scored unassisted before Molly Davin responded 61 seconds later. Lines hit the back of the net on a free-position shot with 3:07 showing before Gabriele capped the scoring.
The Green Terror won 16 of the 25 draw controls behind Messersmith's career day in the middle of the circle.
McDaniel returns to action at Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
