Smith tallies 13 in balanced win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel used a 21-7 fourth quarter to pull away and defeat Franklin & Marshall 59-43 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.

Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) led the Green Terror (11-11, 9-8 CC) with 13 points while Libby Bowles (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) added a career-high 11 and Melanie Yeomans (Myersville, Md./South Hagerstown) chipped in nine on senior night.

Kristin Hamil paced the Diplomats (8-14, 5-12 CC) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

After a first three quarters that featured seven ties, three lead changes and only one lead of larger than four points, McDaniel scored 14 straight points to open up a double-digit lead midway through the fourth quarter.

A Renie Tsomos (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) layup gave the Green Terror a 38-36 edge with 1:11 to play in the third quarter and ignite the run in the final period.

Yeomans contributed five of the first 12 points in the fourth quarter to open up the big lead.

Hamil broke up the drought with 4:55 showing but that's as close as the guests could get.

Franklin & Marshall jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game.

Trailing 11-4, Smith drained a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 burst the tied the game with 2:55 showing.

Tied at 20-all, Hamil hit a jumper and Lindsey Powers converted a fourth-chance layup just before the first-half ended for a 24-20 lead at the break.

The Green Terror tallied the first eight points of the third quarter before the Diplomats fought back to tie the game at 33-all with 3:13 showing.

Smith recorded five steals to lead a 20-steal night for the team, turning 27 Franklin & Marshall turnovers into 22 points.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
