WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ursinus scored five points in the final minute to top McDaniel 53-49 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Melanie Yeomans (Myersville, Md./South Hagerstown) led three players in double figures for the Green Terror (2-5, 1-3 CC) with 11 points. Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic College) and Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) added 10 points each.
Lydia Konstanzer and Toni Suler each recorded double-doubles to lead the Bears (4-4, 2-2 CC), who finished the game with a 48-26 advatnage on the glass. Konstanzer recorded 20 points and 13 rebounds while Suler had 15 points and 14 rebounds.
After watching Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) hit a 3-pointer and Yeomans score four straight points for a 43-41 lead, Suler laid home a shot to even the game once against with 3:42 to play.
After Smith and Knostanzer traded baskets, Yeomans canned a pair of free throws with 2:19 to play for a 47-45 edge.
Three Suler free throws gave the visitors a 48-47 edge before Yeomans hit an elbow jumper with 56.3 seconds remaining for a one-point lead.
Suler answered at the other end, hitting a jumper in the lane with 40.0 seconds left to give Ursinus the lead for good.
Maya Kornfeld and Kaci McNeave combined to hit three out of four free throws in the final 14.9 seconds to secure the win.
The Bears jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the game's first 2:29 and extended that advantage to 18-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Two Suler free throws with 8:26 to play in the second period pushed the lead to as large as 12.
Trailing 26-14, Yeomans converted a layup in transition with 3:52 on the clock to spark an 11-1 run that closed the deficit to 27-25 just over two minutes later. Libby Bowles (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) drained two 3-pointers during the stretch.
Ursinus took a 31-27 lead into the locker room before expanding the advantage to 35-29 midway through the third quarter.
A Burgess triple and Smith layup cut the margin to one.
Emily Metzger (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) led McDaniel on the glass with five rebounds while Renie Tsomas (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) added three assists and three steals.
The Green Terror returns to action at Goucher on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
