Perez earns academic honor
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East), a junior on the McDaniel women's basketball team, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II Division III women's basketball first team on Thursday.
Perez earned her first nod to the team with a 4.0 GPA as of the end of the fall semester. Perez was one of eight players selected to the first team. The graphic design major now advances to the national ballot with all of the first-team selections from the eight districts for the Academic All-America team, which will be released on Feb. 18.
Perez enters tonight's game against Washington (Md.) with a team-best 214 points on the season, ranking ninth in the Centennial Conference. She has a conference-best 38 3-pointers, including hitting a career-high six as part of a career-best 24-point performance against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. A 37.4-percent shooter, who has connected on 43.2 percent of her 3-point attempts, she is also a 73.7-percent free-throw shooter. Perez has added 26 assists and 12 steals.
A captain, Perez has earned the Duke of Edinburgh Award at the Bronze Level and been a member of the Dean's List at highest honors for all five semesters on campus.
The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) select the All-District team. District II consists of all of the Division III colleges and universities in Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
To be nominated for the Capital One Academic All-America program presented by CoSIDA, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
