Wingerd leads way in fourth straight win
WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel built a nine-point lead early in the second half before holding off Ursinus for a 55-50 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory on Saturday.
Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) notched her third straight double-double to lead the Green Terror (12-4, 7-3 CC) to its fourth straight win, recording 14 rebounds to go with 12 points. Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) added 14 points while Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) chipped in 10.
Jessica Porada led the Bears (6-10, 4-7 CC) with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Gianna Pownell added 14 points.
Keyed by nine straight points from Pownell, Ursinus put together an 11-2 run to overcome a 34-25 deficit and knot the game at 36-all all with 10:49 to play.
Pownell converted a three-point play to force the time.
Wingerd responded by hitting the first of two free throws on the other end to put McDaniel back in front for good.
Perez added a 3-pointer with 9:53 to play to push the lead to four before Diamond Lewis sliced the deficit in half with two free throws.
Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) hit a jumper to push the lead back to four.
After a Devin Butchko free throw, Emilee Bosley (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) hit her second triple of the game to stretch the lead back to six with 7:04 on the clock.
Alyssa Polimeni responded with a 3-pointer of her own a minute later before Shimrock and Wingerd traded layups to keep it a three-point game with 3:36 showing.
Nichols pushed the lead to five before Porada hit back-to-back jumpers to once again close the deficit to one with 1:31 remaining.
A Nichols layup with 1:15 to play pushed the advantage back to three before a Nichols putback with 21.3 seconds showing virtually sealed the victory.
Butchko hit a layup with 12.3 seconds to play but Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) canned two free throws with 9.8 seconds on the clock to make it a two-possession game.
The two teams slogged their way through the first nine minutes of the game, which featured just 13 combined points against 17 combined turnovers.
Trailing 9-6 after Porada hit a layup with 10:29 showing, Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) converted a three-point play to tie the game 25 seconds later.
A Pownell free throw put Ursinus back in front by one before Wingerd hit a layup with 9:41 to play in the opening half, sparking a 15-5 run that opened up a nine-point edge with 2:27 to play in the first half.
Layups from Pownell and Porada closed the deficit to five before Wingerd hit the first of two free throws with 0.1 seconds showing to make it a 25-19 advantage at the break.
Wingerd added four assists and three steals to her double-double.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
