YORK, Pa. – York (Pa.) jumped out to a 14-0 lead before staving off a second half McDaniel rally to notch a 71-56 non-conference women's basketball victory on Tuesday.

Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Green Terror (4-1) with a career high 14 points while Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) added 11 points each.

Kristin Haley led a balanced attack for the Spartans (5-0) with 12 points.

Wingerd hit the second of two free throws with 14:20 on the clock to snap a 14-0 run by York.

Baskets by five different Spartans keyed the game-opening run.

York extended the advantage to 25-7 before the Green Terror tallied four of the next six points to make it a 16-point game.

Two Nichols free throws in the final 10 seconds made it a 36-21 game before Brittany Hicks hit a layup just before the first-half buzzer to make it a 17-point game at the break.

McDaniel tallied the first six points of the second half to close to within 11 before Jess Selby canned a 3-pointer with 17:17 to play for the Spartans' first points of the stanza.

A Lauren Ballenger (Silver Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) three-point play with 14:56 showing made it a 43-34 game, cutting the deficit to single digits for the first time since the first three minutes of the game.

A Stephanie Fish (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) three-point play with 10:15 to play closed the margin to 50-42 but McDaniel could muster only a Perez 3-pointer – the 99th of her career – over the next 5:58.

In the meantime, York methodically extended the lead back to 16 before Perez hit the first of two free throws with 4:17 on the clock to make it a 61-46 game.

Allie Eader (Ijamsville, Md./Linganore) chipped in four assists and four steals for McDaniel.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Dickinson on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
