WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe in overtime to defeat Wilkes 60-57 in the championship game of the 2013 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament in women's basketball action on Saturday.
Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Green Terror (2-0), including hitting a pair of free throws with 9.4 seconds left in overtime to seal the win.
Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) turned in a double-double performance with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to join her classmate on the all-tournament team.
Elana Stambone led the Colonels (1-1) with 20 points to also earn an all-tournament nod.
A Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) jumper with 2:04 to play in regulation and two free throws 58 seconds later brought the hosts back from a four-point deficit on a Chelsea Brown layup with 3:44 remaining in regulation.
Kayla Brehm hit two free throws 50 seconds into overtime to give her team the lead before Allie Eader (Ijamsville, Md./Linganore) just beat the shot clock to knot the game at 56-all with 3:35 in overtime.
Two Wingerd free throws 1:12 apart gave the hosts the lead before Brown hit 1 of 2 from the line with 24.8 seconds showing to make it a one-point game.
A Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) layup off a Davis steal-and-pass with 13:44 to play in the opening half put the hosts on top 12-6 – their largest lead of the half.
A Stambone layup capped a 9-0 run to give her team a 26-21 advantage with 4:40 showing en route to a 33-30 halftime lead.
Stambone hit a 3-pointer out of the break to stretch the lead to six but Perez and Eader answered with back-to-back triples, knotting the game at 36-all with 18:55 showing, sparking a 14-1 run. Perez capped the burst with a 3-ppinter at the 16:17 mark for the largest lead of the game by either team.
Wilkes, however, countered with a 14-2 stretch of its own to take a 51-46 lead on a Ginny Edwards layup with 7:40 remaining.
Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) added eight points and 10 rebounds while Eader and Davis had nine points each. Eader also had four steals.
The Green Terror returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at home against Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
