Wingerd records double-double
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dickinson gradually pulled away in the second half to notch a 67-53 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.
Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the Green Terror (2-3, 0-2 CC) with a double-double, recording 11 points to go along with a career-best 17 rebounds. Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) registered 13 points.
Belma Mekic paced four players in double figures for the Red Devils (5-1, 1-1 CC) with 18 points. She completed a double-double of her own with 16 rebounds. Dana Walsh added 15 points while Bridget Borgese and Sarah Phillips chipped in 10 points each.
Trailing 30-29 at halftime, Codi McMaster (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) hit a layup on the opening possession of the second half to put McDaniel on top by one.
After Walsh and Eader traded buckets, Walsh hit the second of two free throws to knot the game at 33-all with 17:23 showing.
A Mekic three-point play put the visitors on top 22 seconds later before Wingerd converted from short range to make it a one-point game once again with 16:27 on the clock.
Phillips hit a 3-pointer with 12:54 showing, snapping a drought by both teams and sparking an 8-1 stretch over the games' next 3 minutes, 22 seconds.
McMaster finally snapped a 7-minute, 32-second Green Terror cold snap from the floor, converting a three-point play with 8:55 to play.
Two Wingerd free throws got the deficit to 47-43 but McDaniel could get no closer the rest of the way.
The Red Devils reeled off nine of the game's next 10 points, pushing the lead to double digits en route to the 14-point win.
After three ties and two lead changes in the first five minutes of the game, Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) hit a jumper, Wingerd converted a three-point play and Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) put home a layup to put the hosts in front 15-8 with 12:40 to play.
Trailing 21-16 on a Perez steal-and-layup with 7:49 showing, the Red Devils tallied the next eight points to take 24-21 lead en route to the one-point halftime edge.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Frankin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
