WESTMINSTER, Md. – What a difference a year can make. A year removed from its fourth Centennial Conference (CC) title, the McDaniel women's basketball team failed to make the conference playoffs for the first time in nine years.
The Green Terror has just six of those 2010-11 players returning to 31st-year head coach Becky Martin's roster in 2011-12, so it will need to be a quick learning process for the 10 newcomers to the program.
McDaniel will look to the valuable experience gained by junior Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and sophomore Allie Eader (Frederick, Md./Linganore) for leadership on the court and hopefully be able to get a full year out of all three members of the senior class.
Meg Biggart (Darien, Conn./Darien), Kelsey Franklin (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) and Katherine Restrepo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) have all missed time during their first three season with major injuries.
To help combat the youth, Martin brought in a trio of sophomore transfers, who will be called on early to use their experience and assist with the seven freshman who play in their first college game with the season tips off at home against Penn State-York.
The one thing that is certain as the campaign opens – the Green Terror needs to find offense. Last year's squad averaged just 54.8 points per game and lost 77.4 percent of that scoring. Rybak is the leading returning scorer at 6.3 points per game. Eader is next at 2.7 while Restrepo averaged 2.4.
A guard-heavy roster will likely mean that Martin can return to her running style and more possessions will mean more opportunities for points.
