WESTMINSTER, Md. – A year after winning the Centennial Conference championship, McDaniel will need to replace the vast majority of its offense from the title run.
Gone is Ali Moreland – a 1,000-point scorer. Gone is Sally Grace – a 3-point sharpshooter. Gone is Ashley Lyles – a strong low-post presence. Gone is Catherine Mills. Gone are Katelyn Fischer and Sam Witman – players who were expected to run the point.
Head coach Becky Martin, in her 30th season at the helm, will be looking to seniors Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) and Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) to anchor the team from inside. Kim Acton (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) will have to continue to provide a spark at both ends of the floor.
The return of Meredith Larsen (Phoenix, Md./Bryn Mawr) and Kelsey Franklin (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) will provide some much needed offense after missing all of last season with injuries. Emma Adams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) will also have to contribute after missing the second half of the year with an injury of her own.
It will be that core along with the emergence of freshman guard Allie Eader (Frederick, Md./Linganore) that will be key to Martin continuing her run of conference playoff appearance – a streak which is now at nine consecutive years.
The depth provided by expanded roles from Kate Zimmer (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), Rachael Rybak (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) and Katherine Restrepo (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) will be the key to that stretch reaching 10 and a chance at back-to-back crowns.
