Green Terror uses 20-2 run to overcome deficit, down Ursinus
WESTMINSTER, Md. - With the game on the line and time expiring, Ali Moreland (Davidonsville, Md./South River) once again sank a pair of free throws to lift McDaniel to victory. This time it was with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation and it gave her team a 50-48 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball win over Ursinus on Thursday.
No player reached double figures for the Green Terror (9-4, 8-2 CC), who got nine points apiece from Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Sally Grace (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy).
Lindsay Teuber led the Bears (6-7, 4-5 CC) with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Jaclyn Hilf added 11 points, hitting 3 of 4 from behind the arc.
For the second time in three games, McDaniel found itself in a deficit of double digits in the second half, trailing by as many as 17 with 16:40 to play.
Still trailing 43-28 after Hilf hit her third triple with 13:24 remaining, Grace connected on a kick-out 3-pointer 2 minutes, 20 seconds later to spark a 20-2 run that gave the Green Terror its first lead since 8-7.
A single Lyles free throw and two from Grace closed the deficit to single digits before Teuber snapped a 5-minute, 27-second scoring drought with a layup to momentarily push the lead to 45-34.
Baskets from Cara Thompson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Moreland closed the deficit to seven before Lyles hit a pair of free throws at the 4:59 mark to make it a 45-40 game.
A Moreland jumper 51 seconds later trimmed the deficit to three before Grace hit a runner in the lane to make it a one-point game with 3:23 to play.
On McDaniel's next possession, Thompson hit a jumper to turn the one-point deficit into a one-point advantage.
Grace hit an eight-foot runner in the lane for to stretch the lead to 48-45 with 1:46 to play.
With 1:18 on the clock, Teuber halted a 6-minute, 39-second cold spell from the floor to slice the deficit to one.
The Green Terror missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 57.2 seconds on the clock before Teuber hit the second of two free throws 24 seconds later to even the game.
After dribbling out 15 seconds in the backcourt, Moreland took the ball on a drive to the basket and was fouled to go to the line with 5.2 seconds on the clock.
The senior once again calmly sank both attempts and the defense did not allow the Bears a clean look as the final horn expired, giving McDaniel its ninth straight win.
After a back-and-forth first eight minutes of the game, Hilf hit a 3-pointer with 11:57 to play in the opening half to spark an 11-3 run that gave the visitors a 20-11 lead with 7:53 showing.
Amber Yacenda's layup with 28 seconds remaining in the half gave Ursinus a 26-17 lead but Moreland hit a pair of free throws with 1.5 seconds on the first-half clock to close the deficit to 26-19 at the break.
A 10-0 run out of the second-half gate extended the lead to 17 before the Green Terror made its comeback.
Moreland finished with eight points and six rebounds while Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added six points, six rebounds and three assists. Grace added three assists to her nine points.
McDaniel returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
