Moreland caps McDaniel rally over Dickinson

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The final two of Ali Moreland’s (Davidsonville, Md./South River) 13 points capped a second-half rally that propelled McDaniel to a 59-58 win over Dickinson in the Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball first-round game on Wednesday.

            Ashley Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) added a double-double with team highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the fourth-seeded Green Terror (15-11), who six-point deficit early in the second half to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinal’s at top-seeded and No. 19 Muhlenberg.
            Brooke Muller paced the Red Devils (14-12) with a game-high 22 points, including 20 points in the first half.
            Trailing 50-46 with 5:41 to play after six straight Dickinson points, Whitney Snoops (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a jumper a minute later to snap a 5-minute, 34-second scoring drought.
            After Laura Lyons stretched the lead back to three with a single free throw at the 4:19 mark, Kim Staub (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hit a jumper and Lyles converted a free throw to pull the hosts even with 3:46 on the clock.
            The two teams traded baskets over the next 1:16 before Alesha Sisco hit the first of two free throws with 2:11 showing to give Dickinson a 56-55 lead.
            With 1:54 to play, Lyles hit a pair of free throws to give McDaniel a one-point lead.
            Sisco converted a layup with 1:20 showing to give the Red Devils their final lead.
            After a Dickinson timeout with 19.7 seconds, the Green Terror brought the ball up the court and Moreland drove down the right side of the lane and hit the game-winning layup with 8.3 seconds to play.
            The Red Devils called another timeout but could not convert a pair of shots in the final three seconds.
            McDaniel opened the game on a 9-0 run, holding Dickinson to an 0-for-6 start to the game.
            Maxie Etess broke up the shutout with 13:42 to play in the half, sparking a 25-9 run that gave the Red Devils a 25-18 lead with 3:25 to play.
            A Moreland 18-footer in the waning seconds of the first half pulled the hosts within 32-28 at the intermission.
            After the 0-for-6 start, Dickinson finished the half shooting 14-for-20.
            The Green Terror tallied six of the half’s first eight points to knot the game at 34-all before a 10-4 Red Devil run capped by a Lyons 3-pointer with 15:47 showing.
            Staub finished with 11 points while Catherine Mills (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) netted 10. Snoops grabbed 10 rebounds.
