GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg's first hit of the game was a home run, keying a 5-2 victory over McDaniel in the first elimination game of the 2018 Centennial Conference (CC) softball tournament on Saturday morning.
Morgan Scardina (Pasadena, Md./Seton Keough) led the second-seeded Green Terror (21-20-1) with two hits and – for the second day in a row – ranged to left-center to make an outstanding catch with multiple runners on base.
Sarahrose Jonik kept the top-seeded Bullets (22-14) alive in the double-elimination tournament with a three-run home run in the third inning.
Scardina led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle. After moving to second on a sacrifice, she came around to score on a Tayler Hishon (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Sophia Blasius drew a one-out walk in the top of the third before a throwing error put runners at second and third. Jonik followed, sending a 3-1 pitch out to right-center for a 3-1 lead.
After leaving two runners aboard in each of the first three innings, McDaniel loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth but Liz Cowell ranged back and caught a flyout over her head to keep it a 3-1 game.
However, another ranging grab by Cowell in center stranded two more runners on base – part of 12 runner left on for the Green Terror.
A Shelby Baker leadoff walk in the sixth, Nicole Farese two-out bunt single and a Madison Cannatelli pinch-hit single pushed the lead back to two.
Jonik walked to lead off the seventh before a Taylor Doi bunt went for a basehit. A one-out Meredith Taylor single up the middle set the final margin.
