McDaniel to battle for CC title
WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel will travel to Allentown, Pa., for the 2013 Centennial Conference (CC) softball championship tournament, to be held on Saturday and Sunday.
The second-seeded Green Terror (21-15, 10-6 CC) will take on third-seeded Haverford (23-11, 10-6 CC) in Saturday's first first-round game at 10 a.m. The second game of the double-elimination tournament features top-seeded Muhlenberg (28-7-1, 14-2 CC) and fourth-seeded Washington (Md.) (23-16, 9-7 CC), which will begin 30 minutes following the first game.
Saturday's action concludes with the losers of the first two games meeting in an elimination game followed by the winners from the day's first two games. The tournament concludes on Sunday with action beginning at 11 a.m. with an elimination game.
The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on May 9. The NCAA field will be announced on Monday, May 6 at 10 a.m.
McDaniel is seeking its fourth CC championship in its eighth tournament appearance. The Green Terror has six CC titles overall, including winning the 2012 crown.
McDaniel swept Haverford and Washington during the regular season and were swept by Muhlenberg. The Green Terror took a 4-2 decision over the Fords in game one before needing 10 innings for a 2-1 victory on Apr. 7. McDaniel closed the regular season with two wins over the Shorewomen, taking game one 7-2 before closing the conference slate with a 4-3 victory. On Apr. 6, the Mules topped the Green Terror 5-2 in the opener before plating three runs in the bottom of the 10th for a 4-3 game-two win.
Sophomore Caroline Brehm (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) leads all of Division III with 300 strikeouts entering Tuesday's regular-season finale against York (Pa.), which will be played in Westminster with the doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.. She has fanned an average of 10.43 batters per game over her 201 1/3 innings of work. She has allowed just 129 hits and 58 walks and has a perfect game to her credit this season.
The top four of the hitters in the Green Terror starting lineup are hitting better than .300 this season led by Rachel Sidney's (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) .387 average. She has team bests of 46 hits and 22 runs scored. Among her hits are six doubles and a triple. She also has 13 RBIs from the leadoff spot and has drawn 15 walks. Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) has a .384 average with 38 hits, including five doubles, a triple and four home runs. She has 19 RBIs and 18 runs scored. Ally Galati (Milford, Pa./Cornwall Central) is hitting .337 on the season with 12 runs scored and seven RBIs. Stacey Armacost (Glenville, Pa./South Western) round out the quartet, hitting .307 on the year with 10 runs scored and 12 RBIs. Among her 27 hits are two doubles and two home runs.
