Keeping dreams alive

Gettysburg sweeps McDaniel to keep playoff hopes alive

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Abby Ferguson recorded four hits in two games to lead Gettysburg to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Monday.

The Bullets (19-15, 9-7 CC) rallied to take game one 4-3 before scoring early for a 6-3 win in the nightcap to keep their playoff hopes alive with two CC doubleheaders scheduled for Tuesday.

Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) and Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) each rapped out three hits for the Green Terror (12-22, 4-12 CC) in the twinbill.

Trailing 3-1 in the opener, Catrina DelGais drew a walk to lead off the home fifth.

With one out, Maggie Maguire reached on an infield single to put runners at second and third before Abby Ferguson singled to center to plate DeGais, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Caitlin Bay followed with an RBI single of her own to tie the game before Megan Lott dropped a single into left for the go-ahead run.

Beans singled to lead off the sixth inning. With one out and a flyout to left, Beans was able to move to second with the tying run but on an appeal play to first, the junior took off for third and Gettysburg drew across the diamond to end the threat.

A fielding error and two-out RBI double from Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the second.

A two-out error prolonged the third, helping lead to a two-run frame. A Beans double to the gap came one batter later to stretch the lead to 3-0.

A Sam Bader single coupled with a fielder's choice, infield single and throwing error broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

Trailing 1-0 in game two after Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), who reached on an error to leadoff the game, scored on a Fusco double, DeGais rapped a one-out double to left in the bottom of the frame.

Rahs followed with a two-run blast inside the left-field foul pole to turn the one-run deficit into a one-run lead.

Singles by Maguire and Furguson followed by a Bay sacrifice fly stretched the lead to 3-1.

With two outs in the second, Joy Hallfors and DeGais singled before Rahs doubled in Hallfors.

Maguire followed with a two-run two-bagger into the gap for a 6-1 lead.

An error, an infield single from Sidney and Fusco single up the middle loaded the bases with one out in the fifth for Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown), who single to the gap in right center to score Leigh Blohm (Bel Air, Md./Toms River North [N.J.]) and Sidney to make it a 6-3 game.

McDaniel returns to action at Gallaudet on Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
