Sweep on the Shore

Washington takes two from McDaniel

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Lauren Dockrill had three hits and four runs scored to lead Washington (Md.) to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Thursday.

The Shorewomen (17-15, 8-4 CC) staved off a seventh-inning rally from the Green Terror (8-18, 3-9 CC) to eek out a 7-6 win before winning the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the opener to lead McDaniel, which mustered just two hits to go with five errors in game two.

Knotted at 4-all, Lindsey Glascock was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth before Leigh Carbutt drew a walk.

With two outs and runners still at first and second on a fielder's choice, Becca Nicely singled through the left side to score Carbutt for a 5-4 lead.

A Brittany Walter triple stretched the advantage to 7-4 before she was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

With two outs in the seventh, Elfert reached on a single up the middle before Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) cleared the fence for the first time this season, pulling McDaniel within one.

Tracy Davis (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) and Sara Erlichman (Bedford, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) followed with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners but Meaghan Kimme got a fly ball to secure the win – her eighth of the season in the circle.

Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) drew a walk to lead off the inning before a fielder's choice on a bunt attempt gave the Shorewomen one out and a runner on first.

Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch put Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Warrenfeltz on third and second, respectively.

Elfert followed with a double to the gap for a 2-0 lead.

Dockrill led off the bottom of the inning with a double of her own.

After a popout, Carbutt singled to put runners at the corners. She stole second before a two-out double from Sally Snover knotted the game at 2-all.

Nicely followed with a two-run blast over the right-field wall to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.

A Lauren Wildasin (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) single and fielder's choice before a Sidney single and Fusco walk loaded the bases in the top of the fifth.

Warrenfeltz drew a walk to force in Ashley Crawford (New Market, Md./Linganore) before Elfert singled to score Sidney and tie the game at 4-all.

The nightcap featured five errors and a combined 10 unearned runs.

Back-to-back errors with one out in the bottom of the first inning coupled with a Dockrill single staked Washington to a 2-0 lead.

Two more errors in the second led to five unearned runs.

A leadoff error and one-out singles from Shaelan Nottingham and Dockdrill loaded the bases.

An RBI groundout and two-run single from Carbutt pushed the lead to 5-0 before a walk to Kylie Nottingham and single from Snover coupled with the fourth error of the game made it a 6-0 game.

Nicely dropped a single into right to score Nottingham for a 7-0 advantage.

A Kaitlyn Vadenais (North Smithfield, R.I./North Smithfield) walk, passed ball and wild pitch on a strikeout put runners at the corners.

Beans hit into a force out to score Vadenais, making it a 7-1 game in the top of the sixth.

A Nottingham single and throwing error put runners at first and second before Glascock drew a walk to load the bases.

With two outs, Snover walked to force in Nottingham before Kelly Ward singled in Dockrill to end the game.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Ursinus on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m.
