Brewer keys Muhlenberg to doubleheader sweep of McDaniel
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Ashley Brewer went the distance in the circle in game one before rapping out three hits in the nightcap to lead Muhlenberg to a doubleheader sweep of McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday.
The Mules (15-10, 6-2 CC) took the opener 4-3 in a game that featured four errors leading to no earned runs before completing the sweep with an 8-2 victory.
Erinne Warrenfeltz (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) led the Green Terror (8-16, 3-7 CC) with three hits and three RBIs in the twinbill.
A two-out error in the outfield opened the gate for three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning in game one.
Brittany Blohm and Chelsea Benjamin followed with back-to-back RBI doubles before Colleen O'Donnell drove in Benjamin with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
A one-out error and back-to-back singles from Beth Ann Fusco (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Warrenfeltz cut the deficit to 3-1.
Megan Elfert (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) plated Fusco from third with a groundball to make it a one-run game.
A Benjamin single, error, sacrifice bunt and RBI groundout pushed the lead to 4-2 in the fifth before back-to-back singles from Elfert and Jordan Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) around an error set the final margin a half-inning later.
Knotted at 2-all, Brewer led off the home third with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice.
An Epstein RBI single, wild pitch and Jess Kasza base knock gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.
After a hit batter, Shelby Smith singled home Kasza for a 5-2 advantage.
Back-to-back leadoff singles from Erica Wenzel and Brewer, a one-out error stretched the lead to 6-2 in the fourth.
Kasza singled home Brewer before a fielder's choice plated Benjamin for the final margin.
A Rachel Sidney (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) single, sacrifice and Warrenfeltz RBI single staked McDaniel to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
A lead off error and singles from Brewer and Epstein around a Blohm sacrifice fly turned the one-run deficit into a one-run lead in the bottom of the frame.
Sidney drew a leadoff walk in the top of the third and advanced to second on a sacrifice.
Warrenfeltz followed with a single to knot the game at 2-all.
Sidney finished the nightcap 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
McDaniel was scheduled to return to action at Messiah on Tuesday but that doubleheader has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. The Falcons need the date to make up a rained out conference doubleheader from Saturday. The Green Terror will next be in action at Washington (Md.) on Thursday. The first game of the twinbill begins at 3 p.m.
